Mayor Sam Katz plans to hold a taxpayer-funded Christmas party at a restaurant he owns for the second year in a row.

Katz’s holiday party will be held at Hu’s Asian Bistro on Ellice Avenue in December.

The mayor defended his decision, saying many restaurants are booked up over the holidays and he can get a significant discount.

Last year, the mayor’s office spent $2,915 on a gathering for city councillors, department heads and their families at Hu’s, according to expense records.

"When people are busy, I’m able to get a significant discount to save us money," Katz said. "From my point of view, it’s a win-win."
