Mighty Popo live at the News Café

Mighty Popo is a bluesman. Maybe not in the tradition of the great bluesmen of the Mississippi Delta or Chicago’s South Side, but he’s a bluesman nonetheless.

Born a Rwandan refugee in a Burundian encampment, Popo grew up in Burundi and moved to Ottawa as a teen in 1987. Already an accomplished musician, he steeped himself in North American blues music at Ottawa jams and ended up touring with Dutch Mason. In the late ‘90s, Popo struck out on his own, bring a hybrid mix of township jive, rhythmic African finger-picking and Western blues – sung in a variety of languages – to the world through a series of exciting solo albums and on collaborations such as the African Guitar Summit series of discs. His playing and his songs evoke the kind of hurt and hope that crosses all genre distinctions, which is why he calls his music ‘world blues.’

Mighty Popo plays the West End Cultural Centre tonight at 8 p.m. with Phoebe Mann. You can also watch a replay of his performance at the Winnipeg Free Press News Café here.
