Minister to unveil $500-K program to get kids into sports

Children and Youth Opportunities Minister Kevin Chief will unveil a new $500,000 grant program today to get more children involved in sports.

The Sport Opportunities Fund will allow community-based sport and recreation organizations to apply for two levels of grants: up to $10,000 for permanent equipment such as volleyball standards, goal frames and athletic field line painters; and up to $2,500 for equipment with a shorter life span such as volleyballs, pucks and uniforms.

Chief will release more details of the plan at a noon news conference with RCMP Sgt. Rob Lockhart, of gang awareness and aboriginal policing, and Lawrence Mahull, executive director of the Broadway Neighbourhood Centre.
