Miserable weather closes schools, makes for dangerous driving

Classes have been cancelled today at schools in several Manitoba school divisions. Hanover, Sunrise, Red River Valley, Evergreen and Seine River school divisions all reported closures today due to the weather.

River Road at Lockport is closed because of flooding. The department of highways says, because of the blast of winter, travel is not advised on the Trans-Canada Highway from Brokenhead Road east to Falcon Lake, and from Virden west to the Saskatchewan border. Travel is not advised on Highway 44 from the junction of Highway 11 east to the Ontario border. Highway 10 in Riding Mountain National Park is closed because of reduced visibility caused by blowing snow, as well as snow, ice-covered and extremely slippery conditions.

In North Kildonan, Bonner Avenue is impassable between Henderson Highway and Rothesay Street because Bunns Creek has overflowed its banks.

In Winnipeg, snow will end later today and be replaced by sunshine and bitterly cold winds Friday, Environment Canada says.

Another two to four centimetres of snow is expected to fall before ending in Winnipeg late this afternoon. A high of -6 C and north winds at 30 kilometres per hour are in the forecast for today.

Friday is expected to be sunny and cold with a high of -8 C and windchill of -30. The weekend forecast calls for  mostly sunny skies, with highs slightly below normal.

Temperatures are expected to return to normal -- with highs of 3 C and lows of -7 C-  next week.
