Missing Lake Winnipeg boaters found safe and sound
Four boaters who went missing on Lake Winnipeg’s north basin after leaving Poplar River on a four-hour trip to Norway House have been found safe and sound.
RCMP said Friday night a Royal Canadian Air Force Hercules search and rescue aircraft from 17 Wing Winnipeg located the overdue boaters at about 6:30 p.m. Friday.
Four people, including two men, a woman and an eight-year-old boy were on the boat.
Police said the boaters experienced mechanical difficulties.
RCMP in Poplar River were notified around 11 p.m. Thursday when the group didn’t arrive at Norway House at 4 p.m., as expected.
RCMP, in turn, notified the Rescue Co-ordination Centre in Trenton, Ont., and the Canadian Coast Guard, which joined in the search.
After the boaters were located, police said, a radio was dropped to their location and a boat involved in the search was redirected to pick them up.
The four boaters were taken to the nursing station in Poplar River.
One of the boaters was Kevin Hudson, said Tim Mitchell, Hudson’s cousin and the Poplar River band constable.
Hudson was with his girlfriend, another man from Poplar River and a boy who was in Poplar River visiting his father, Mitchell said.
The boy was not related to anyone on board and was catching a ride to Norway House, Mitchell said.
They were heading to Norway House for the Treaty and York Boat Days festival being held this week.
A number of civilian volunteers and organizations were involved in the rescue operation, including the RCMP search and rescue team and Manitoba Conservation and Water Stewardship, which provided a helicopter for use in the search for the missing boaters.
