Mobile program will screen First Nations people for early detection of kidney disease

A new mobile screening program will allow medical personnel to detect kidney disease in First Nations communities in under 15 minutes.

In the First Nations Community Based Screening to Improve Kidney Health and Dialysis (FINISHED) project nurses will travel to First Nations communities to screen people for early detection of kidney disease. After quick blood and urine tests nurses will educate people on how to live healthier.

Health Canada contributed $1.6 million to the project, which combines parts of the Manitoba First Nations Diabetes Integration project and Manitoba Health’s Renal Program and will start in March.

"First Nations communities suffer the highest rates of kidney failure requiring dialysis in Canada," said Grand Chief Derek Nepinak, of the Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs. "FINISHED is a leap forward for our communities."
