Montgomery, Saunders voted top athletes

Skeleton racer Jeff Montgomery and racquetball player Jennifer Saunders were named Manitoba’s male and female athletes of the year Sunday by the Manitoba Sportswriters and Sportscasters Association.

Montgomery, from Russell, is ranked first in Canada and ninth in the world going into this month’s Winter Olympics in Vancouver.
 
Saunders, from Winnipeg, won both singles and doubles titles at the 2009 Racquetball Canada national championships.

The Manitoba Moose, who were AHL finalists in 2008-09, were named Manitoba’s Team of the Year.

The Cactus Jack Wells Memorial Award for impact on the Manitoba sports scene went to Theo Fleury for his attempted comeback to the NHL and his best-selling autobiography, Playing With Fire, which revealed abuse he endured and kept hidden for two decades.

Jonathan Green of the Winnipeg Goldeyes received the Dallis Beck Memorial Good Guy Award.

Free Press sportswriter Ashley Prest and Globe and Mail writer Jeff Blair, a former Free Press sports writer, were inducted into the MSSA Manitoba Media Roll of Honour.
