More Manitobans turning to wine

Manitoba is following a nationwide trend that has seen more people swap their ale for a chardonnay.

Statistics Canada data released this morning shows that Canadian wine and liquor stores sold $6.1 billion worth of wine between 2010 and 2011 -- a five per cent increase from the previous year.

While beer remained the drink of choice for Canadians -- beer and liquor stores sold $9.1 billion worth of beer between March 2010 and March 2011 - its dominance declined as more drinkers turned to wine.

Data shows that beer sales in Manitoba increased 1.4 per cent between 2010 and 2011. During that same time period, sales of wine increased 4.4 per cent.

Overall, beer and liquor stores and other sellers sold $20.3 billion worth of alcohol between March 2010 and March 2011 - a two per cent increase from the previous year.
