Museum one of city's most ambitious construction projects

On April 1, work will begin on one of the most-talked about and ambitious construction projects in Winnipeg’s history — the $265-million Canadian Museum for Human Rights.
A project of that size and stature — it’s Canada’s fifth national museum, the first national museum to be created in more than 40 years and the first to be located outside the National Capital Region — is made up of more than just bricks and mortar.
Here is a list of some of the things that will go into the building of what an museum official describes as " Canada’s most exciting construction project," as well as a few details about the building and the property:
Start of construction: April 1, 2009
Projected completion: February 2012
Location: North end of The Forks , near the foot of Provencher Street Bridge and Esplanade Riel footbridge.
Size of the building: 24,634 square metres (265,166 square feet).
Number of floors above grade: 12
Height of the Cloud (main structure): 50.4 metres (165 feet).
Height of the Tower of Hope: 100 metres (328 feet).
Volume of concrete to be used: 17,863 cubic metres
Number of pre-cast foundation piles to be used: 293
Area of glazed (glass) facade: 5,400 sq. metres
Amount of exterior tyndall stone: 9,260 sq. metres (99,675 sq. ft.)
Amount of Prairie grass: 20,000 sq. metres (215,000 sq. ft.)
Amount of structural steel to be used: 4,400 tonnes
Amount of drywall: 18,000 sq. metres (194,000 sq. ft.)
Number of doors: 370
Length of ramps: 770 metres (2,533 ft.)
