The man who helped guide Manitoba’s NDP to 37 seats in the Oct. 4 provincial election has quit.

NDP Chief of Staff Michael Balagus announced his resignation to staff today after notifying Premier Greg Selinger last week.

Balagus, who headed up the party’s re-election campaign, said he plans to do more international work in the coming months and years.

The 56-year-old worked in Bosnia and Africa prior to accepting a post in former premier Gary Doer’s government.

He also said after more than eight years in government backrooms, he wants to see what more his career and life has to offer.

Ihor Michalchyshyn has been named acting chief of staff.

"I’ll miss it. There’s no question. It’s been a great ride. It’s been pretty exciting and rewarding and I think for the most part successful eight years," Balagus said. "I leave feeling good."
