NDP’s recent 2.5 cent per litre fuel increase protested

The Canadian Taxpayers Federation (CTF) held its 14th annual gas tax honesty day event at the Manitoba Legislature today to protest the NDP’s recent 2.5 cent per litre fuel increase.

The CTF’s prairie director Colin Craig said Premier Greg Selinger promised during the fall election campaign not to raise taxes, and that the gas tax increase flies in the face of that.

Craig said while the province has a good tax record for funding road repairs, confusion remains over just how much the fuel increase will go back into infrastructure renewal.

The Selinger government has said it expects to raise $44.5 million this year with the increase, which took effect May 1. The fuel tax rate went from 11.5 cents per litre to 14 cents.

The NDP has also said with the increase it will spend a record $589 million this year to fix the province's roads and highways.

The CTF also said Ottawa has to commit 100 per cent of fuel tax revenues into road repair.

The CTF’s 2012 gas tax honesty day report noted that over the past year, the average pump price in Manitoba was about $1.195 and of that approximately 25 per cent were taxes.
