NHL wipes games through to Jan. 14

Cancellation brings to 625 number of games lost

WINNIPEG — The NHL has this afternoon rubbed out 15 more days of games, taking us to a dark league through Jan. 14 and likely to decision day on the season.

So now 625 regular-season games of 2012-13 have been canceled, officially taking the 2012 part of the schedule out of the history books.

The extent of this wave of cancellations now brings the league to a point where there is likely only enough regular-season time left for 48 games, the minimum schedule commissioner Gary Bettman said recently he’d consider.

That could well make the next cancellation announcement from the league one scrubbing the entire season unless a new collective bargaining agreement between the owners and players can be reached by early January.

Winnipeg Jets games that are added to the cancellations are Dec. 31 (Tampa Bay), Jan. 2 (Minnesota), Jan. 4 (at Colorado), Jan. 6 (Florida), Jan. 8 (at Columbus), Jan. 11 (New Jersey) and Jan. 13 (Islanders).
