New Music Festival spotlights Steve Reich

Tickets are now on sale for Manitoba’s musical antidote to winter’s bleakness: the international New Music Festival.
The Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra’s 22nd annual festival, which runs Jan. 28 to Feb. 2 will spotlight Pulitzer Prize winner Steve Reich, who has been called America’s greatest living composer.
The New York-based minimalist, who is 76, will be in Winnipeg for festival concerts on Feb. 1 and 2, 2013, that will showcase his works Tehillim and The Desert Music. There will also be a chamber-music evening of his music on Jan. 31.
Reich’s concerts will also feature Scottish percussion virtuoso Dame Evelyn Glennie, who will premiere two concertos written especially for her.
During the week-long festival, leading Greek-Canadian composer Christos Hatzis will also present the world premiere of his WSO-commissioned piece, Redemption.
Festival passes are $99 for adults, $89 for seniors and $59 for students. Individual ticket prices range from $10 to $92. For more information, go to www.newmusicfestival.ca.
