WINNIPEG - A proposed camp for underprivileged children may be getting a second crack at life in the Whiteshell, months after a public uproar helped scuttle plans to build near Meditation Lake.

The Tim Horton Children’s Foundation youth leadership camp, together with the provincial government, are inviting public input on a proposal to place the camp on the Whiteshell’s Sylvia Lake, conservation minister Bill Blaikie announced on Wednesday.

Public consultations for the $10-million project will be held on Feb. 16 at Pinewood Lodge in Dorothy Lake from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m., and in Winnipeg on Feb. 17 at CanadInns Polo Park from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m.

"The Tim Horton Children’s Foundation remains committed to its vision to establish this first-class facility, designed to foster self-confidence and leadership skills in economically disadvantaged youth," foundation vice president Dave Newnham said in a statement.

"We... look forward to discussing this vision with the public in the weeks ahead."

This is the second prospective location for the $10-million camp. In October 2009, a proposal to build the facility at Meditation Lake was scrapped after the results of water testing supported concerns from environmental groups that the lake could not support the intensive development the camp would require.

The year-round camp would include facilities to host up to 260 children, and would be "environmentally friendly," according to organizers. The Tim Horton Children’s Foundation currently operates six similar camps in Canada and the United States.
