New bridge opens at Whiteshell Provincial Park

NUTIMIK LAKE, Man. - A new pedestrian bridge over the Whiteshell River in Whiteshell Provincial Park officially opened this afternoon, connecting the Nutimik Lake Campground with Sturgeon Falls on the Winnipeg River.

The 86-metre, cable-stayed bridge, completed earlier this year at a cost of $570,000, will serve as a link in the Trans Canada Trail and provide easier access to the falls, a whitewater-paddling destination.

The bridge is part of a $4.3-million plan to complete a 370-kilometre section of the Trans Canada Trail that runs from Lake Winnipeg to the Ontario border. About 200 kilometres of this section, dubbed the Border To Beaches Trail, are already complete.

The project is funded by the province, Ottawa and the Manitoba Recreational Trails Association.

Premier Greg Selinger, senior Manitoba MP Vic Toews and Manitoba Conservation Minister Bill Blaikie attended an opening ceremony before a crowd of about 200 people, including local trail association volunteers, walked across following the speeches.

The ceremony was timed to allow the politicians to stop by on the way to their summer cottages.

"My difficulty is trying to get an election sign on Bill Blaikie's property," joked Conservative MP Toews, referring to a cottage owned by the NDP MLA.

The design for the bridge is based on a similar span in New Zealand.
