New cabinet minister Marcelino makes rookie mistake

WINNIPEG -- Premier Greg Selinger had not even unveiled his new cabinet earlier today before his choices sparked controversy.

It has to do with Wellington MLA Flor Marcelino, his choice to be the new Culture, Heritage, Tourism and Sport minister.

Reports say when Marcelino was sure she got the post, her office sent an e-mail to some of her constituents saying she landed the cabinet promotion.

Some say that was a no-no. By tradition, it’s the premier who makes the announcement. Marcelino’s premature news release is being described simply as a rookie mistake and not a breach of cabinet confidentiality.

She was elected in 2007.

Mistake or not mistake, I welcome Mrs. Marcelino as new cabinet minister, is refreshing to have somebody that embodies the multicultural nature of our Manitoba heading that cabinet. Welcome to the major leagues Mrs. Marcelino.
