Cancer patients in Manitoba will soon have access to faster care.
The provincial government announced Monday the opening of a new Cancer QuickCare Clinic. Scheduled to open in the fall, the clinic will be located at the CancerCare Health Sciences Centre facility located at 675 McDermot Ave.
The idea behind the facility is to provide same-day care for cancer patients in need of immediate medical assistance. Currently, patients suffering from cancer-related issues have to stop by an emergency ward or make an appointment with their oncologist.
"This new dedicated cancer clinic is part of our provincial strategy to improve access to expert help for patients, at the right place and at the right time," Dr. Dhali Dhaliwal, president and CEO of CancerCare Manitoba, said in a statement. "Patients undergoing cancer treatment will now have a dedicated clinic that understands their unique circumstances."
The clinic will be open weekdays, evenings and weekends to assist patients with cancer-related illnesses and complications during treatment. Hours of operation are expected to be from 8 a.m.-10 p.m. weekdays and 9 a.m.-5 p.m. on weekends.
The province is also starting up a Cancer HelpLine is to answer questions for cancer patients and offer advice about how to access same-day care. Like the clinic, the helpline will be staffed by nurse practitioners and nurses who specialize in oncology and cancer-related symptoms.
