Manitoba's economy now expected to grow 2.9 per cent in 2012

WINNIPEG — One of the country’s leading economic forecasters has bumped up its forecast for how the Manitoba economy will perform over the next two years.

In its Spring 2012 Provincial Outlook Report released today, the Conference Board of Canada predicts the Manitoba economy will grow by 2.9 per cent this year and by 2.7 per cent in 2013.

In its last quarterly forecast released in February, the Ottawa-based think-tank was forecasting 2012 growth of 2.7 per cent and 2.6 per cent for 2013.

The board also predicts Manitoba will tie Saskatchewan for the second-best real gross domestic product (GDP) growth in the country this year — second only to Alberta’s 3.8 per cent — and tie with Ontario for the fourth best growth rate in 2013.

It predicts the other three western provinces will all outperform Manitoba next year, with growth of 3.7 per cent in Alberta, 3.7 per cent in Saskatchewan, and 3.4 per cent in British Columbia.

It predicts Canada’s economy will expand by 2.3 per cent this year and by 2.8 per cent in 2013.
