Aqua Books has come up for air and will live to retail another day.

The owner of the downtown bookstore has decided to turn the Garry Street institution into a non-profit venture.

The same can’t be said of EAT! Bistro, however. The eatery that shares the same roof as Aqua will close around the end of October.

To make the bookstore viable for the long term in its current home, owner Kelly Hughes is hoping to convert it into a co-op to avoid selling the building.

If a sufficient number of people step forward to buy shares, the initial plan will go ahead. If not, the building will be sold and Aqua will have to find a new home, Hughes said.
