New transit garage to be built
Council's public works committee has approved a plan to hire a construction firm to build a new bus parking and service garage.
An administrative report says Caspian Project submitted the most favourable proposal for the new transit garage, which will be built adjacent to the existing Fort Rouge Garage. The garage will provide space to relocate part of the bus fleet so the existing garage can be upgraded and allow fleet expansion.
The city has secured a guaranteed maximum price of $20.6 million for Caspian Project's submitted building design. However, an administrative report says the price is "subject to revisions resulting from change orders that may arise."
Transit director Dave Wardrop said it will be up to the contractor to pay for any changes to the design that arise from an oversight. If the city decides to change the design, he said Winnipeg Transit would have to pay for the changes.
"So it's a guaranteed maximum price for the given design," Wardrop said.
Wardrop said construction will begin in spring or early summer, and take between 14 to 18 months to complete.
Caspian is also the firm working on the conversion of the old Canada Post building into the new police headquarters.
EllisDon Corp., Graham Design Buildings and PCL Constructors Canada were also shortlisted for the project.
