New vehicles flying off dealership lots

  • Print

Local auto dealers started 2013 with a bang, posting a 10.4 per cent increase in sales of new cars and trucks, during what is typically the slowest month of the year for vehicle sales.

Seasonally unadjusted figures released today by Statistics Canada show 3,204 new cars and trucks were sold in the province in January. That compared to 2,902 in the first month of 2012.

That was in sharp contrast to what happened at the national level, where sales fell by 2.6 per cent in January to 97,872 units from 100,448 in January 2012.

The new vehicles Manitobans drove off the dealership lots in January’s included 2,256 trucks — a category which includes light and heavy-duty trucks, buses, vans, mini-vans, sport-utility and cross-over vehicles — and 948 passenger cars.
