New Yorker trains for North Pole Marathon in Winnipeg

New Yorker Tom Djurdjevich is in Winnipeg to train for the North Pole Marathon.

Djurdjevich decided to take on the challenge after meeting Winnipeggers Joel Semeniuk and Rod Giesbrecht while climbing to base camp on Mount Everest.

"Joel mentioned that temperatures in Winnipeg regularly dive to -30 during the winter," Djurdjevich said. "He suggested that running in Winnipeg on the Assiniboine River in January would be perfect training ground for the North Pole and I accepted the invitation."

Djurdjevich has run in 13 marathons on all seven continents. The North Pole Marathon is 26.2 miles along uneven terrain. Temperatures during April when the run is held range from -10 C to -40 C with the wind chill.

Djurdjevich will train for the marathon all weekend.
