Non-residential construction spending declines in third quarter

Investment in non-residential construction projects declined slightly in the third quarter of this year, according to a new report from Statistics Canada.

The agency said today that $313 million was invested in new commercial, industrial and institutional projects during the quarter.

That was a decline of 0.7 per cent from the $315 million spent in the second quarter, although it was still a 17.5 per cent improvement from the $266 million spent in the third quarter of last year.

Statistics Canada said Manitoba was one of four provinces to see a drop in non-residential construction spending from the second to third quarters. The decline came after three consecutive quarters of increased spending.

Nationally, investment in non-residential projects grew by 0.6 per cent to $12.1 billion from $12 billion in the second quarter of the year. It was the third consecutive quarterly gain.

Canada’s third-quarter total was also up two per cent from a year earlier, when $11.8 billion was spent.
