Garden City Staples workers unionize

Nearly 40 employees of a Staples Business Depot in Garden City are about to get their union cards.

The move comes after more than 65 per cent of the employees at the Leila Avenue location voted in favour of joining the United Food and Commercial Workers Local 832 last month.

"When a company doesn’t respect their workforce, the workers have an option. In this case, they stood up for themselves and joined a union," said Jeff Traeger, president of the local.

The unionizing success at the Staples store comes on the heels of other organizing breakthroughs in Canada’s retail industry, including at H&M stores in Quebec and Ontario.
