WINNIPEG — Police warned today that a ‘significant’ number of new drivers have been caught with alcohol in their system at holiday checkstops – an absolute no-no for novices at the wheel.
Winnipeg police Ins. Jim Poole of the Winnipeg Police Service and Ward Keith, registrar of Manitoba Public Insurance, will discuss the highway traffic act breaches and criminal code offences this afternoon.
Novice drivers who violate the zero blood alcohol restriction are subject to a 24-hour roadside suspension. They are also required to attend a hearing in which further suspension may be applied.
According to MPI, novice drivers include drivers in the Learner and Intermediate Stage, authorized Instruction in Class 5 or Class 6, and drivers in the first three years of the Full Stage Class 5 or Class 6.
