The Manitoba Nurses Union has reached a tentative agreement with the Manitoba government that includes wage increases and provisions to improve patient care and address workload issues.
The deal, which covers about 10,000 MNU members, includes language that will ensure the government and union will work co-operatively to find ways to reduce the need for excessive overtime by nurses.
"The committee is pleased about the agreement and we will be recommending it," said MNU president Sandi Mowat.
A ratification date of April 30 has been set for the tentative four-year agreement.
"I believe that nurses will be pleased because this certainly helps us remain competitive (with nurses’ wages across Canada)," Mowat said. "We have made some good progress in some wording issues to give nurses some tools to deal with workload issues. We also have an agreement to strike a joint safe staffing committee to look at staffing levels."
The increases, including market adjustments based on wages received by members of other nurses unions across Canada, include annual two per cent general salary increases from 2013 to 2016. There are 1.1 per cent market adjustment increases in 2014 and 2016.
Mowat said nurses will receive retroactive pay for the 2013 increase, which should be received by members 90 days after ratification of the agreement.
