OPP constable charged in fatal collision involving cruiser

An Ontario Provincial Police constable has been charged with dangerous driving causing death in connection with a September crash that killed 42-year-old Gloria Assin.

OPP officers were transporting Assin to the Kenora detachment at 2 a.m. on Sept. 23 when their marked cruiser collided with a tractor trailer at Highway 17A and Redditt Road. Assin died from her injuries.

Ontario's Special Investigations Unit reviewed the collision. The unit is an arm's length agency which investigates reports involving police when there is a death or serious injury.

Troy Bender is set to appear in court in Kenora on Dec. 20.
