Rising country star Lindi Ortega will join John Kendle at the Winnipeg Free Press News Café at 12:15 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 6 to talk about her career and her shows with the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra this coming weekend.
While Ortega’s name may be relatively new to mass audiences, she’s been living and working in Toronto’s independent music scene for much of the past 15 years, working side gigs, singing as a backup singer and opening for other artists while working on her own music.
Her breakthrough came with the release of her album Little Red Boots in 2011. It was lauded almost immediately for its blend of old-time, traditional country sounds with modern feel and production, and Ortega, who is now based in Nashville, has maintained her momentum with two subsequent full-length recordings – Cigarettes and Truckstops in 2012 and Tin Star in October 2013.
Ortega’s orchestral shows with the WSO will feature several of her signature songs, such as Little Red Boots, Little Lie and Jimmy Dean. They will be conducted by her arranger, Charles Cozens.
Showtimes are 8 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, Feb. 7 and 8, and 2 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 9. Tickets are available at ticketmaster.ca or wso. ca Watch Ortega’s video for the song Tin Star here:
