Outdoor film screenings aimed at hardy hockey fans

Organizers of the Canadian Sport Film Festival figure if Winnipeggers play hockey outdoors in February, they’ll probably watch films about hockey outdoors, too.
The festival makes a two-night stop in Winnipeg this weekend. The puck drops at 7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 8, at The Forks with five short films on hockey to be viewed on a snowscreen.
Among the short films to be shown are Champion City: The 1896 Winnipeg Victorias, a 25-minute 2012 docudrama that retells the story about how the team defeated the Montreal Victorias for the Stanley Cup, and Night Work: A Sawchuk Poem, about one man’s goal against Hall of Fame goalie Terry Sawchuk.
The festival moves indoors to the Park Theatre Saturday night at 7 p.m., when it will show the Manitoba première of Awaken the Dragon, an American documentary feature that focuses on a group of cancer survivors that form a dragon boat racing team.
At 9 p.m., it will screen Fordson: Faith, Fasting and Football, another American doc, about a predominantly Arab-American high school in Detroit that prepares for a football game during Ramadan against cross-town rivals.
Question and answer sessions with the filmmakers are scheduled after the screenings via Skype, a festival organizer said today.
