A Toronto man and woman have been arrested after selling fake gold jewelry to an unsuspecting Winnipegger.
Winnipeg police said today a man and woman went up to a 26-year-old man waiting in the 1400 block of Regent Avenue West on Feb. 16, and told him they needed money and would sell their gold jewellery at "a very reasonable price."
Police said the man bought several gold chains and rings for $1,500.
The victim called the police after finding out the jewellery was worth only $20.
After a lengthy investigation, police arrested a woman at a hotel in the 1400 block of Niakwa Road on March. Officers seized several pieces of jewellery there.
Police said a man was arrested the next day when he turned himself in.
Constantine Caldararu, 34, and Elisa Caldararu, 33, both of Toronto, have been charged with fraud under $5,000 and possessing stolen property.
Both have been detained in custody.
