Payroll jobs, earnings edge up in Manitoba

WINNIPEG — Manitoba had one of the country’s smallest increases in both payroll jobs and average weekly earnings in February, according to new Statistics Canada figures issued today.

There were 552,400 Manitobans working in non-farm payroll jobs during the month, the seasonally adjusted figures show, which was an increase of only 0.1 per cent, or 600 positions, from January’s total of 551,800.

The gain was the smallest among the seven provinces that saw an increase, although it was on par with the monthly gain for Canada.

Manitoba also saw only a modest gain in average weekly earnings for the month — up 0.7 per cent to $776.14 from $771.02 in January. That left the province tied with British Columbia for the smallest earnings gain among the eight provinces that had increases.

Nationally, earnings rose by one per cent to $843.91, the agency said.

Payroll employees are people who work for someone else, as opposed to being self-employed. Most of the province’s workers fall into that category.
