Photos that ‘hit me in the gut’

A look back at some of our best local photos of 2012

Content, emotion, engagement: These, to me, are what make a great photograph.

Exposure and composition help, obviously, but without these three elements, the photo will not resonate. When I look at a photograph, I want it to tell me a story, to hit me in the gut, to make me want to know more.

Looking back at 2012, our Free Press photojournalists’ work filled these requirements again and again.

These are my choices for the best of 2012.
