Raiders, Pipers to meet in provincial high school hockey championship

The teams are set for the battle of Manitoba: on Monday night, the John Taylor Pipers will face the Oak Park Raiders to determine the 2013 provincial high-school hockey champion.

Both teams secured their spot in the final with victories in their semi-final matches on Saturday at the St. James Civic Center.

The Pipers, a favourite coming into the tournament after winning the Winnipeg High School Hockey League championship, dispatched the Morden Thunder with a 3-1 victory.

After dominating play for much of the game, the Pipers scored the game-winning goal with 8:34 left to go in the third period, when Graham Philp's slapshot beat Morden goalie Morgan Wall, who was spectacular under fire.

The Pipers then withstood a last-minute power-play from the Thunder to hold onto their one goal lead, before an empty-net goal sealed their 3-1 win.

The Raiders then battled the Stonewall Rams in a gritty game for the second final spot.

The Rams tied the game at 2-2 after a controversial penalty call on Raiders' Cody Groen, whose neck guard had fallen to the ice.

But during a third-period power-play, the Raiders' Tyson Morrissey lofted a puck into the back of the net for a 3-2 lead.

The Raiders clinched the 4-2 win with an empty-net goal with 16 seconds left to play.
