WINNIPEG — The plan to create a heritage park at the site of Winnipeg's birthplace has cleared its final hurdle at city hall.

City council voted unanimously to approve the sale of surplus city land at and next to the former site of Upper Fort Garry to the Friends of Upper Fort Garry, provided the volunteer group completes the park by 2014.

The Friends take possession of the land, located north of Assiniboine Avenue between Main Street and Fort Street, on June 1.

Building on a historical site? Does that mean the Manitoba Club should be removed as well? I certainly hope so as I saw a 19th century map of the site that clearly showed a path led to the fort's front gate.

yeah, you have to wonder about those advocating building on or right next to an historic site. take a walk around, there are dozens of empty lots for apartments.

"Living one block west of the site, I would have much preferred seeing an apartment block built there. Winnipeg needs more people living downtown"

There are a lot better spots for an Apartment. There are better areas to Developet AKA Point Douglas, then bulding over the most Historical spot in the City.

Go downtown, go.

Living one block west of the site, I would have much preferred seeing an apartment block built there. Winnipeg needs more people living downtown.

And who is going to finance this when the "FRIENDS" runout of money, just like the Human Rights Museum???
