Plans for Upper Fort Garry park unveiled

WINNIPEG - Plans for a $19 million Heritage Park and Interpretive Centre were unveiled today by the Friends of Upper Fort Garry.
Jerry Gray, chairman of the FUFG said $10.3 million of the $19 million needed has been raised so Winnipeggers will see the first signs of the new park being constructed this year.
Gray said he is pleased to be part of building a showpiece to what many people call the birthplace of Manitoba.
"This has taken a long time — some would say 100 years," he quipped during the unveiling in a tent set up at the park site at Main Street and Assiniboine Avenue.
Plans include an interpretive centre which will house a theatre, digital library, food service, and office space.
Both the provincial and federal governments contributed $1.5 million while the city donated the land. The province also purchased the Petro Canada gas station at Broadway and Main Street.
