Plaque honouring famous journey stolen

The plaque honouring the late Don Starkell and his famous "Paddle to the Amazon" has been stolen from its East Kildonan home.

According to residents in the area, the plaque, which is located in East Kildonan Park at the corner of Kildonan Drive and Bronx Place, has been missing since last Monday. One person said it appears the plaque was chiselled at and then pried away from its stone base.

The commemoration recognizes the start of the canoe journey made by Starkell and his sons Dana and Jeff from the Red River in Winnipeg to the Amazon in Brazil on June 1, 1980. The trip covered 19,620 kilometres and lasted nearly two years.

It’s not the first time the Starkell plaque has been vandalized. Residents report the monument was splattered with house paint a few years ago.

If you have any information on the missing plaque, call the City of Winnipeg’s 311 line.
