The Players Cup and the Winnipeg Jets True North Foundation have entered into a three-year agreement for the NHL team’s charitable foundation to become the primary beneficiary of the annual PGA Tour Canada event.
The Players Cup will be played July 18-21 at Pine Ridge Golf Club as one of eight tournaments in the first season of the PGA Tour’s official involvement and rebranding of the Canadian circuit.
"As a stand-alone entity, we only have so much reach," said tournament executive director Ryan Hart, president of the local marketing firm MF1.
The Players Cup, since 2010, has donated $275,000 to local charities.
Now in the family of the PGA Tour — which has raised $1.85 billion for charities among all of its tours — the event on the new PGA Tour Canada was a perfect fit for True North.
"First of all, the PGA Tour brand is extremely powerful and has a ton of equity in it," said True North chairman Mark Chipman at a press conference today. "So just the association with it gives profile to our foundation and what we’re doing.
"The demands on our foundation seem to be ever-increasing. The programming we’ve developed continues to grow. So higher profile for our foundation allows us to raise more dollars and do more programming and that’s great."
This summer’s Players Cup will include the Tuesday Celebrity Pro-Am. Committed to participating are Jets defenceman Zach Bogosian, Chicago Blackhawks captain Jonathan Toews and former Stanley Cup winner and current Jets radio analyst Shane Hnidy.
The fundraising associated with the event will begin in earnest shortly with a "The Players Cup Ultimate Sports Raffle."
Tickets will be $50 and include a weekly pass to the Players Cup. The raffle prizes include a trip to the 2014 Masters, a suite for a 2013-14 Jets regular-season game, corporate membership for four at Pine Ridge, 2013 Winnipeg Blue Bombers season tickets and 2014 Winnipeg Goldeyes season tickets.
