WINNIPEG — The Players Cup golf tournament officially joined the new PGA Tour Canada today.

PGA Tour senior vice-president Jeff Monday was in the city for meetings and made the announcement this morning at the Winnipeg Winter Club.

The event, previously a staple on the Canadian Tour, will be held July 15-21, 2013.

The tournament operators, led by advertising/marketing firm mf1 president Ryan Hart, have a new deal to hold the 72-hole tournament at Pine Ridge Golf Club for the next three years.

"It became very evident that the partnership to utilize our expertise and resources and assets we have could build PGA Tour Canada into something pretty good," said Monday, referring to the decision this fall to bring the Canadian Tour into the PGA Tour family.

"What was an easy choice was to come to Winnipeg. We have all the right elements here."

Monday spoke of the golf course, the volunteer and sponsor base and the community’s passion for golf.

He also confirmed that the 2013 Tour schedule is likely to be eight tournaments — with hope to expand it further beyond next year — and that the top five players on the season’s money list will earn promotion to the Web.com Tour, while the next five players on that list will earn a berth to the Q-school tournament for Web.com cards.
