Police to conduct scaled-down search for woman's body in landfill

The discovery of several new possible locations where the remains of Tanya Nepinak are buried at the Brady Road landfill has ruled out any successful chance of a search.

Winnipeg Police Chief Keith McCaskill said police now have no idea where to search at the site, adding that any significant search will not be conducted.

McCaskill said that a handful of officers from the WPS identification unit will spend a few days searching a small area of the landfill where a group of native elders believe Nepinak’s remains are buried.

No further search will be conducted, he said.

McCaskill said there are some details still to be finalized but the limited search will begin Oct. 2.

"It’s not what we want to say," McCaskill told a news briefing this morning.

McCaskill said he has spoken to Nepinak’s family about the change in plans.

"It was difficult explaining to the family but they understood."

Nepinak went missing in September 2011 and police believe she is the victim of a homicide. Shawn Lamb, 52, has been charged in connection with her death.
