Winnipeg police shut down a well-travelled area near the Polo Park Shopping Centre Friday night while they investigated a suspicious package.
At around 11 p.m. Friday, Portage Avenue was closed in both directions near St. James and Empress and several nearby restaurants were evacuated as a precaution. Winnipeg Transit was advised and re-routed buses.
The bomb squad arrived just before midnight, and completed their work about 90 minutes later. They gave the all-clear around 1:30 a.m. Saturday morning; police kept the area blocked off for a short while later.
Much of the focus appeared to be adjacent to the A&W restaurant on Portage Ave.
Early in the investigation, a police sergeant on scene told the Free Press he expected "it's gonna be a while" as they investigated and secured the scene. Members of the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service were also on stand-by but departed when the bomb squad gave the all-clear.
Police did not disclose what was in the suspicious package.
