Police forces to crack down during Road Safety Week

Police from across the province staged a news conference in front of the Legislature Building over the noon hour to promote Canada Road Safety Week.

Winnipeg Police Chief Keith McCaskill was joined by Bill Robinson, commander of RCMP D Division, Ontario Provincial Police deputy commissioner Larry Beechey, and police from across the province.

Beechey, who is chair of the traffic committee of the Canadian Association of Chiefs, said police forces across the country will crack down on four key factors contributing to vehicle deaths: impaired driving, distracted driving, not wearing seat belts, and speeding and reckless driving.

Canada Road Safety Week runs from May 14-21.

McCaskill said that while police enforcement plays a key role in reducing vehicular deaths, he added that the public has to get involved to encourage other drivers to practise safe driving.
