Man stabbed to death on Notre Dame city's 12th homicide of the year
Stabbing on Kennedy in separate incident sends man to hospital
WINNIPEG -- Police are investigating the city’s 12 homicide of 2012 after a man died early this morning on Notre Dame Avenue.
Officers were called to the 1300 block of Notre Dame Avenue where they found the injured man, who a family member said had been stabbed in the heart.
"He died in front of my mother's house," said the woman who identified herself as the man's sister.
He was taken to hospital in critical condition, where he later died.
Outside the Thriftlodge Hotel, there were seven evidence markers in a parking lot east of the hotel, leading away from the hotel's beer vendor.
An employee of the hotel said the crime didn't happen on the property, and another employee said the victim was at the bus stop. However, a man staying at the hotel -- who did not want his name used -- said he saw a woman taken away for questioning who'd been dancing with the victim in the hotel's bar.
The man said as he arrived back at the hotel around midnight he saw paramedics working to save the man on a sidewalk on the north side of the street.
"It was a little disturbing, just seeing the guy getting his chest pumped," he said.
Police tape surrounded the area, and a single cruiser sat next to the scene to guard it. One evidence marker sat immediately next to the door of the vendor, with white chalk next to it. Yellow tape surrounded the door area of the vendor as well.
The police’s homicide unit is investigating at the scene and officers are attempting to reach the victim’s next of kin.
A police spokeswoman said Friday afternoon there was a suspect in custody, but did not release the age or gender of the suspect.
Police did not announce any charges the suspect was facing.

Police are also investigating an earlier violent incident after a man was assaulted in the 400 block of Kennedy Street.
He was rushed to hospital in critical condition shortly after 9:30 p.m. Thursday night with knife wounds. His condition has since been upgraded to stable.
