A 26-year-old man faces murder, attempted murder and other charges in connection to a fatal stabbing on the Osborne Street Bridge this weekend.

Mowlid Korane Mohamed is in custody accused of second-degree murder for the death of local musician Joshua Bentley, 18, and attempted murder of another man, 20.

Both victims were taken to hospital in critical condition from stab wounds after being found around 11:30 p.m. Friday on the Osborne Street Bridge.

Bentley died from his injuries. A makeshift memorial to Bentley, the lead singer in the local hardcore band, Empty Hands, remains on the bridge this morning.

Mohamed is also accused of assaulting and uttering threats to a young woman.

The accused has been detained at the Winnipeg Remand Centre.

"Mohamed has had significant police involvement in the past and I will acknowledge he has association or is associated to a local street gang here in our city," said Const. Jason Michalyshen during a Winnipeg Police Service press conference today.

He said the investigation has revealed the victims and suspect, not known to each other, were at a house party at a nearby apartment block. The suspect, in the company of two females, left the gathering before the victims and stayed in his vehicle outside the apartment block until the victims came out.

The suspect then confronted the victims near the bridge. The 18-year-old was attacked, causing serious upper-body injuries. The 20-year-old also sustained an upper-body injury.
