Police make arrest in fatal stabbing

Winnipeg police have arrested a man for the killing of Adam Jackson Nattaway, whose throat was slashed this weekend.

Police identified Nattaway, 39, as the man who lurched into the Pizza Shack at Sargent Avenue and Sherbrook Street early Friday evening, clutching his slashed and bleeding throat. He sat down and tried to ask for help but couldn’t talk.

Within minutes, Nattaway was dead, Winnipeg’s 27th homicide victim this year.

Const. Jason Michalyshen said police were called to the 500 block of Sargent Avenue about 6:30 p.m. Friday, where they found Nattaway. He was pronounced dead in hospital.

Several people were taken into custody immediately after the homicide, Michalyshen said in a statement late Sunday morning.

One man faces charges.

Edmond Seymoure Wescoupe, 49, was charged with manslaughter in the slaying.

A surveillance camera captured gruesome footage of Nattaway stumbling into the pizza place.

Staff member Navtej Vains said the man was bleeding profusely from the left side of his neck as he pushed open the door of the family-owned Pizza Shack.

"He tried to say something but could not," Vains said.

Vains was not there at the time, but he watched the horrific scene on the pizza and East Indian food shop’s security video. He spoke on behalf of his sister, Ravinder Uppal, whose English is limited — she called 911 Friday night and tried to help the man.

"A lot of blood was here," Vains said.
