Police release name of man shot dead at Sals

Winnipeg police today confirmed the identity of a man killed in an early-morning shooting Thursday at the Salisbury House restaurant on the Pembina Highway at Stafford Street.
The dead man is Jeffrey Michael Lau, 23. His identity was reported in the Free Press on Thursday.
The second man shot, identified in news reports as Garrick Nickel, 22, has been upgraded to stable condition.
The shooter has not been caught.
Police are looking for witnesses who were in the restaurant at the time but left, WPS spokesman Const. Jason Michalyshen said. He said police believe they could provide helpful information as to what they saw, adding it’s hoped they would contact police.
Michalyshen said police are looking into the possibility the victims and the shooter were involved in gangs. A justice source told the Free Press Thursday that rival factions fighting for control of the city’s drug trade was the motivation for the shooting, which police said was a targeted attack.
Michalyshen said police do not know how many shots were fired by the shooter or if his victims fired back. He said the WPS forensics identification unit will remain at the scene, gathering evidence and trying to determine how many shots were fired and where they ended up.
Police tape was still up today with officers in at least three police cruisers guarding the scene.
The restaurant remains closed.
