WINNIPEG — A standoff at a house in the North End ended this afternoon when police found no one inside.

A visibly shaken man said he was working on the house in the 700 block of Flora Avenue this morning when he saw a man with a gun. The worker ran away and called the police around 11 a.m.

Police arrived minutes later, surrounded the house and kept the perimeter until the Winnipeg Police Service Tactical Squad arrived.

Shortly after 2 p.m. a loud bang resonated throughout the neighbourhood, triggering a chorus of car alarms. Police spokeswoman Jacqueline Chaput said the sound was a flash bang, a device used to get the attention of anyone who may be inside the house.

A second and third flash bang were heard around 3:15 p.m.

Two neighbouring schools - Immaculate Heart of Mary School on Flora Street, and King Edward Elementary on Selkirk Avenue - were locked down during the standoff.

Chaput said children were being allowed to leave if accompanied by a parent, but any children who usually walk home from school or whose parents cannot come get them would remain at the school until the situation was resolved.

"It's far enough from the schools that the kids don't appear to be in any immediate danger, however the schools have made the right decision and elected to go into lockdown mode to ensure the safety of the kids," she said.

Chaput could not say if the lockdown was lifted immediately after police discovered no one inside the home.
