Police target drivers talking on cellphones, texting

If you’re still texting or talking on your cellphone while you drive, you do so at the risk of receiving a hefty ticket.

Policing agencies today announced they will be stepping up enforcement in February and will be targeting drivers who refuse to put their cell phones away.

People who are caught doing so will receive tickets that are $199.80. That law has been on the book in Manitoba for nearly 18 months.

Officials say people who are texting are 23 times more likely to get into a motor-vehicle collision.

The RCMP are fully behind the crackdown, says the province’s top-ranked Mountie.

"The RCMP is committed to the safety of Manitobans on our province’s roadways," said Assistant Commissioner Bill Robinson, Commanding Officer of RCMP "D" Division. "Through monitoring, education, and enforcement, we are working to reduce the number of collisions and deaths caused by distracted drivers."

Manitoba Public Insurance announced today it is providing $120,000 in funding to police agencies ─ Winnipeg Police Service, RCMP and Brandon Police Service ─ to conduct additional enforcement toward distracted drivers this month.
