Polo Park Target store one step closer to reality
The Target store proposed for the Canad Inns Stadium site at Polo Park is one step closer to reality, as city council’s Assiniboia community committee has approved plans for the retailer.
Couns. Scott Fielding (St. James-Brooklands), Paula Havixbeck (Charleswood-Tuxedo) and Grant Nordman (St. Charles) voted unanimously Tuesday afternoon to approve plans for a 144,000-square-foot, two-storey Target store that would rise on the northwest corner of what’s now the Canad Inns Stadium site.
At the end of the 2012 Canadian Football League season, the Winnipeg Blue Bombers plan to move into new offices at Investors Group Field at the University of Manitoba. Once the move is complete, the city intends to complete the $30.25-million sale of the 26-acre Canad Inns Stadium site to Polo Park Shopping mall owner Cadillac Fairview and Shindico Realty, who would then make eight acres of the old stadium site available to Target.
This development still needs to clear several more hurdles, Shindico development manager Bob Downs said.
The Target store planned for the site would feature enclosed parking on the ground floor, with retail space on the second floor, said planning consultant John Wintrup. This design is more appropriate for an urban Target, he said, noting much of the parking will not be visible from the exterior.
The building design would also be more pedestrian and bicycle-friendly than a conventional big-box store, Wintrup said.
