Man, 53, dies after vehicles collide on Portage Avenue downtown

WINNIPEG -- A 53-year-old man has died from injuries received in a multiple-vehicle collision on Portage Avenue downtown at about 12:10 p.m. Monday, police say.

The man was driving a Chevrolet Lumina west on Portage Avenue when he swerved into the eastbound lanes near Young Street. The Lumina was hit on the driver’s side by an oncoming Chevrolet Trail Blazer, police say.

A secondary collision took place with a Ford Contour, also travelling east.

Anne Clarkson witnessed the crash and said a silver sedan was driving west on Portage Avenue when it appeared to slide into oncoming traffic heading eastbound. Clarkson said the sedan appeared to be speeding when it drove into eastbound lanes and slammed into a black SUV.

The driver's side of the silver sedan was completely ripped open.

"I'm still shaken," Clarkson said, adding, "it just happened so fast."
