Power still off for 600 hydro customers

Manitoba Hydro crews are still working to restore power to 600 customers in southeastern Manitoba.

More than 5,000 people were left in the dark following Thursday's snowstorm, mainly in the Piney, Whiteshell, Falcon Lake and West Hawk Lake area.

By late Saturday, 1,500 customers were still without power.

Hydro spokesman Scott Powell said crews are now focusing on areas near Piney that suffered severe damage in the winter storm, including Badger, Wampum, Vita and Woodridge. Close to 200 hydro poles have broken in Piney alone, and crews need to put in new poles and re-string power lines, Powell said.

"They take time to replace," he said.

Hydro has also received isolated calls regarding outages in Lac du Bonnet and Falcon Lake, he said.
